Central Portugal

Central Portugal - The people, area and attractions

The people

property central portugalThe past 50 years has seen a marked outflow of people from rural Central Portugal seeking employment in the bigger cities and overseas. Therefore the locals and the local authorities are welcoming and accommodating to foreigners investing in houses for sale, in part for the increase in revenue for local business, which are mostly small family run enterprises, and in part, simply because the Portuguese are very friendly.
Generally, the rural Portuguese have large extended families and social events are local in nature, but there is always time for a chat and a glass of the local wine with friendly neighbours. Our neighbours made our move to Portugal a very positive experience. We were overwhelmed by their friendliness and generosity of gifts of fresh bread, red wine and tangerines.

The local area

Considering the rural location, this part of central Portugal is well serviced by amenities. Most villages have at least a local store, post office, pharmacy, church and a café. If not all of these services, it is never far to the next village or town that has what you are looking for. central portugal area
Also, each parish has a colourful weekly market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, clothes, household goods and livestock. Even if you don't need to buy anything, a trip to the local market is always a memorable experience.
The small towns in this area Pedrogao Grande, Pedrogão Pequeno, Figueiro dos Vinhos & Sertã have all the usual shopping facilities, a multitude of good cafes and restaurants, supermarkets, numerous builders yards and hardware stores, health centers, dentists and pharmacies. There are several hospitals in the area with the main hospital for specialist treatments located in the City of Coimbra 70 kms away. The larger towns and cities in the region, Coimbra, Pombal and Leira have a wealth of shopping and facilities and as a bonus many historical attractions and peaceful parks, turning a shopping trip into a good day out.

Local Attractions & Entertainment

The Portuguese love their 'festas' and each parish hosts a number through out the year. You can expect parades, singing, local crafts and artisans, great food and music to the early hours! There are also a number of competitive events which take place annually, for example, the speed car rally, triathlon and go kart championships to name a few. All contribute to a cohesive community spirit and a good day out, right on your doorstep!
Considering the beauty and tranquility in this area of Central Portugal, it is not spoilt with tourism; travelers are still able to get a taste of the real Portugal. It is little known, still relatively undiscovered and the area has some stunning scenery and countryside. The reservoirs of Aguieira, Cabril, Santa Luzia and Castelo de Bode are large blue lakes surrounded by remarkable scenery perfect for walking, bicycling, watersports or fishing.

The area offers the historical wealth of ancient roman ruins, castles and monasteries. Slightly further afield, the white sandy beaches of the Silver coast are only under an hours drive away. The mountains of the Serra da Estrella are within easy reach, providing opportunities for hiking and camping in the summer, and skiing in the winter.
